The 8th Alresford Rotary 10k and Fun Runs were held on Sunday the 21st June. The weather was perfect for running with grey skies and a gentle breeze. A record 315 runners finished the 10k with Matt Bennett from Southampton winning for a second time in 3 years in a time of 33.45. Carmen Sanchez-Toribio from Winchester and District Athletics Club set a new ladies course record of 36.29, beating Kathy Bailey, the previous record holder home by nearly 2 minutes. Associate member Zoe Slattery not only provided support to the registration team before the race, but she also went out and won her age category. With sponsorship from The Watercress Company and Alresford Salads, all the runners received a medal and a bag of watercress, with those who entered in advance also getting a technical T-shirt. The children’s races, organised by Sun Hill Junior PTA, proved as popular as ever and provided a splendid sight as the young runners tore off around the park before crossing the finish line to receive their medals. The sun came out as the last few runners finished to round of another successful event. The Club received some great feedback from runners with special praise for the friendliness and helpfulness of the marshals. Special thanks to Anya Stewart and her daughters for stepping in at the last minute to man the water point and to Edward and Christine Laine for their help handing out the water. We had great support from Rorie Whybro and the Perins team, and the runners were led around the course by Dom Irvine on his bicycle; Dom recently broke the 50 year Lands End to John O’Groats tandem record covering the 854 miles in just 45 hours. Next year’s event will be on Sunday 19th June 2016.
